Does Skype Screen Share Share Audio?

Skype is a great way to chat with people all over the world. It’s the perfect platform for social catch-ups as well as business meetings, whether it’s an audio or video call.

One of the really great features of Skype is screen sharing. Screen sharing is when you can allow anyone in your Skype call to see your screen.

This can be really helpful in meeting settings where you may want to show slides on your device to all of your colleagues.

But what about audio? Say you have a presentation that includes a video, when you play it, will the rest of the call be able to hear it?

The answer is no. At least not at the moment.

We’ll go into the logistics of it in further detail in just a moment, but in short, when you initially screen share on Skype, they won’t be able to hear any additional audio (also see, ‘Why Is My Mic Not Working?’).

However, this doesn’t mean that the feature isn’t actually available. It is possible to share your audio through the screen sharing option should you want to, but you’ll need to follow a few steps first.

Don’t worry, though, because we’re about to go through everything in a little more detail down below!

System Sound On Skype

So, to have a full understanding of sharing audio on Skype, you’ll need to know how to share system sound. What’s system sound?

It’s essentially the sound that comes through the integrated speakers in your device.

When you listen to a song or a video on your device, the sound comes through this current audio device.

When sharing your entire screen, your other callers can hear you through your microphone but they cannot hear any sound that is coming through these speakers (also see, ‘How To Make Your Mic Sound Better‘).

So if you were to play a video while screen sharing, those on the call with you will see the screen fine, but they’re not going to be able to hear the audio.

They may hear some of the sound being picked up by your microphone, but that’s not going to be very good quality (also see, ‘How To Make Your Mic Louder’).

Luckily, with a few commands, you can share your audio while on skype.

Now, this can be a little different from device to device. So I’ve broken it down into different types of devices, follow the instructions of whichever device you are screen sharing from.

1. iPad

  • Sign into Skype. If you don’t have an account already you’ll need to create one.
  • Locate and click the ‘Calls’ option. Then scroll down your contact list until you get to your desired contact.
  • Locate and click the ‘Video’ icon to start the call if you are calling just one contact. If more than one person is likely to join the call, locate and click the ‘Meet Now’ option which will allow you to invite others to the call.
  • Once the video call begins, you can begin screen sharing through the IOS control center which can be found at the top right corner of the screen. You’ll need to swipe down and tap and hold on the screen recording icon.
  • Click the Skype option and then locate and click ‘Start Broadcast’
  • And you’re done.

Tip: There should be a red banner at the top of your screen to remind you that others can see your screen.

After a couple of seconds after screen sharing, you may notice a Do Not Disturb button.

You may want to turn this mode on to avoid unexpected messages and texts being shown to your friends, family, or colleagues.
